Choosing toys for 1 and 2 year olds
Between 12 months and 3 years, play is about grabbing, pushing, fitting, splashing and copying. Big pieces, simple actions
At this age a good toy does one thing clearly: a shape drops into a hole, a key turns, a duck walks and lights up, a carrot squirts water in the bath. Look for chunky wooden pieces, soft fabric books and toys that reward a single push or twist. Ride-ons and the indoor slide need a level floor and an adult within arm's reach.
